My Spotify Year in Review is Here and I Have Some Things to Say About it

Every year Spotify puts together this “year in review” for its listeners. It shows you the number of minutes you spent listening to music, the top artists, most listened songs, and other stuff like that. The only reason why those prior two sentences exist is because there are still peasants people that use Apple Music. I’m not sure if Apple does their own Year in Review for the people who pay money to hear the newest Drake album 2 hours before everyone else for their service but if not, you’re missing out. Since this blog is an emotional replacement for a diary, I wanted to put pen to paper (or sausage-like fingers to the touchscreen) and talk about my year in music.

I am very grateful for Spotify and everything that they do for me. From letting me play “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child when I start thinking about my ex to playing “Can’t Be Tamed” by Miley Cyrus when I’m feeling like a bad bitch. Spotify has been there for the highs and lows. I look at the minutes I spent listening to music as an important indicator for a lot of things. I consider myself a music connoisseur. So when Spotify goes off and sells my data to advertisers and Corporate America, they know they are getting the best possible data out there. All 21,000 minutes of it. As long as I continue to pay my bill on time they get to continue using my data to prop up their stock price. It’s the price of doing business, I pay money and they get to sell the 21,000 minutes of data that they gather from me, they have to play Michelle Branch for me whenever I want. It’s a win-win. Let’s dive into the data and see what it says about me.

My immediate thought when I saw this list was, “Where is Fergalicious?” But other than that I had a pretty good idea that this would be the top 5.

5. Plain Jane REMIX (ft. Nicki Minaj)– the only song on the list that I can’t really sing along too due to the words in the chorus. I’m not gonna type out the lyrics but if you are unfamiliar with the words to the song you can see them here. A$AP Ferg puts out bangers, and this is no exception. You put Nicki on any feature and it becomes an absolute bit. I have no problem with this coming in at number 5, as it shows my bad boy side.

4. The 1999 Grammy-Award Winning Hit Smooth by Santana Featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty– an absolute classic. This song was actually number one on my 2017 Year in Review so it slipping to number 4 isn’t surprising. This song was the original Despacito, and it was very ahead of its time. This song is truly unforgettable.

3. New Rules by Dua Lipa– Dua Lipa had herself a year, she dominates my year in review. She holds 40% of my Top 5. I’m going to get into more detail about her in a bit but I will say that this song is such a flex. How many artists are able to reinvent the 10 Commandments and turn them into the 3 rules that you must follow in your everyday life? The answer is one.

2. September by Earth, Wind, & Fire– This is my favorite song of all time. I love everything about this song. Right from the jump when you hear the trumpets blare you know you’re in for 3 minutes and 34 seconds of pure brilliance. (I could make a sex joke here, but I’m mature so I won’t). This song is one of the finer moments in music and it is impossible to be sad after you hear it. The words don’t mean anything, nor do they make sense, but it doesn’t matter because you get mesmerized by the funk.

1. One Kiss by Dua Lipa & Calvin Harris– My number one song of the year took 2018 by storm. This is one of those songs I will never get tired of hearing. This song comes on and the shoulders just start moving, it’s truly an unexplainable feeling. When I first heard it I was skeptical; I needed scientific proof and research done to show that one kiss is, in fact, all it takes. But the more I listened to it, something changed, I became a believer. I am a completely different person after hearing this song and I honestly think that after almost 25 years being alive, that I’m finally the best version of myself. Rumor has it that this song was originally written for Mozart but he said it was too emotional for him to perform and so he passed it onto Dua Lipa, and I am so thankful that he did.

Some Other Things I’ll Touch On but Won’t Go Into Huge Detail About:

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Dua Lipa is my number one artist. What else can be said about her that I haven’t already touched on. Britney Spears was number 2, which makes sense because she’s the shit.
Nicki Minaj and Fergie’s’ omission from my top artists hurts and rattled me to my core. I need to be better next year. They’ve given me too much in this life for them not to be amongst the elite.
I only listen to the same 6 songs when I lift heavy and they are all heavy metal/ WWE entrance themes but seeing them in my top 10 songs kinda has me regretting the whole thing.

Spotify makes this playlist too to broaden your musical horizons. Putting Florida Georgia Line as the artist I should listen to is the reason why I don’t give different music a chance. They stink, and it’s a shame that I won’t even bother seeing what else is on that playlist because of it.

If you are going to take anything away from reading this list, I hope that it is that I have an undeniable amazing taste in music.
