Music Monday: Flo Rida

Each Music Monday will be formatted as followed: an overview/ my opinion on their said career, followed by the ranking of their top 5 songs. No artist is without flaws, their worst three songs will also be judged and ripped to shreds.

As a reminder, this is not going to be a series where I list no-name songs off an artist’s shitty second album that’ll you’ll hear occasionally in an urban coffee shop. We only grade hits here. I’m not looking for songs that have the best underlying message. I’m not looking for songs that represent the artist’s struggle and triumph over something shitty that happened to them. I don’t care about any of that. We are only ranking the cream of the crop, the pinnacle of an artist’s success. Before you ask, I will not be ranking The Beatles’ songs, as I do not want to tarnish my blog with overrated garbage. If you have a problem with that, or my rankings, and want to make your criticisms known, you can email all of your concerns to VinnieWontCheckThis@gmail.com. Prior versions of this series can be found here.

So with that, let’s get started.

Tramar Lacel Dillard was born in Carol City, Florida, on September 17, 1979. He was the 8th child in his family and has 7 older sisters. He has a twin sister as well. He was part of a 4 man rap group called the Groundhoggz for 8 years. He mainly acted as the group’s hype man. The group didn’t go anywhere nor gain any significant interest from labels. After deciding to work solo on a demo tape, it attracted the attention of Rick Ross, who then got him signed to the same label. Wikipedia has no information on Flo Rida’s whereabouts from 2000-2007 but I’m just going to assume he would do what any Floridian does and just spent his time becoming a shuffleboard master. His debut album Mail on Sunday was released in 2008 and put him on the map. His debut single Low ascended the summit of the billboard charts, remaining at number one for 10 weeks. It was the third most successful single for the 2000s decade and continues to be played in clubs to this day. The rest of the album was good, had a song also go top 10 (In the Ayer), and another go top 20 (Elevator), but Flo Rida had the recognition he needed to carve out a lengthy career for himself. He followed his debut up with R.O.O.T.S a year later in 2009. The album had a song go number one (Right Round) top 5 (Sugar), and top 20 (Be On You). Flo Rida began embracing being a club artist and realized that working with EDM artists can secure him a strong bag. It served as the inspiration for his third album Only One Flo in 2010. With that he had a top 10 hit (Club Can’t Handle Me) and a top 20 (Who Dat Girl). This album was weird because is it really an album? It’s 8 songs and 27 min, this thing is shorter than I am. His fourth album Wild Ones came out in 2012. The album was a commercial success, it had a song go number one (Whistle), top 3 (Good Feeling), top 5 (Wild Ones), and top 10 (I Cry) hits. Wild Ones the album was a huge success and I had no idea it turned out to be his most recent album. I had no idea it’s been 7 years since we got a Flo Rida album, almost seems criminal. We haven’t been completely deprived of Flo Rida these past 7 years as we did get an EP in 2015. My House released and had a song go top 10 (G.D.F.R) and top 15 (My House). This project was seven songs and was 23 minutes and it’s considered an EP but 8 songs 27 minutes means it’s an album?? I don’t get it. Whatever, another sneaky Flo Rida fact I have is that he has sold over 100 million records and is one of the highest selling artists of all time. He has the same amount of sales as Beyoncé, Fleetwood Mac, and the Backstreet Boys and doesn’t nearly get the same level of respect that these artists get. (This also continues to fuel my thesis that Beyoncé is the most overrated artist of all time, but that is not here nor there).

Toughest Omission: Who Dat Girl (ft. Akon): this song was almost in the number five slot, but then I listened to Wild Ones again and decided that that one is better. However, this song did give us an all time television moment in Parks and Rec where Ron Swanson is hammered dancing to this tune. Pretty good.

5. Good Feeling: Take me back to Christmastime in 2012 where I got a new iPod Touch and the new Dre beats. I was doing nothing but playing temple run while listening to this bop. Life was good. I hope to recapture that moment of happiness again.

4. Wild Ones (Ft. Sia): I did not realize Sia was the female voice in this. I’m not sure anyone really thinks about this song anymore (myself included), despite it being one of the biggest hits of 2012, and that’s a real shame.

3. Club Can’t Handle Me (ft. David Guetta): I love this song even though it’s factually incorrect, the club can handle basically anything and anyone. You can cry there or fuck over there. Anything goes really, it’s basically a free for all.

2. Right Round (ft. Ke$ha): This song is 10 years old, I have no idea what any of the lyrics mean, or the song’s underlying message. What I do know, however, is that it is a certified BANGER. Despite not understanding what this song is about, our boy Flo put out one of the most relate able lyrics of all time when he said “I’m spending my money I’m out of control.” Also how iconic is Ke$ha for getting a number one song before she even released her debut single?

1. Low (Ft. T-Pain): Hell is being in the bathroom at a bar and this song comes on out there while you’re stuck waiting for the person in line to finish up. I didn’t know that this song was intended to be sung by Nelly but he turned it down because he thought it was corny. Flo Rida saw his opportunity and made a career out of it. When I die, play this as they lower me into the ground. It is my only request.

Since nobody really cares about Flo Rida’s worst songs I am going to power rank the best “Flo Rida man” headlines I can find.
