Each Music Monday will be formatted as followed: an overview/ my opinion on their said career, followed by the ranking of their top 5 songs. No artist is without flaws, their worst three songs will also be judged and ripped to shreds.
As a reminder, this is not going to be a series where I list no-name songs off an artist’s shitty second album that’ll you’ll hear occasionally in an urban coffee shop. We only grade hits here. I’m not looking for songs that have the best underlying message. I’m not looking for songs that represent the artist’s struggle and triumph over something shitty that happened to them. I don’t care about any of that. We are only ranking the cream of the crop, the pinnacle of an artist’s success. Before you ask, I will not be ranking The Beatles’ songs, as I do not want to tarnish my blog with overrated garbage. If you have a problem with that, or my rankings, and want to make your criticisms known, you can email all of your concerns to VinnieWontCheckThis@gmail.com. Prior versions of this series can be found here.
So with that, let’s get started
Demetria Devonne Lovato was born on August 20, 1992 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Lovato was raised in Dallas, Texas. She began playing piano at age seven and guitar at ten, when she also began dancing and acting classes. In 2002, she her first big break with an acting gig on Barney & Friends.

In 2008 she decided to go the Disney Channel route on her road to superstardom and was cast as lead role in the movie Camp Rock alongside the Jonas Brothers. A song by Lovato off the Camp Rock soundtrack gave Demi her first top 10 hit (This is Me). Her debut album, Don’t Forget, was released in September 2008, and while it didn’t have any notably chart topping songs, the album itself was met with positive reviews by critics. The following year in 2009, the cash cow that is Disney Channel wanted to milk Demi for all she was worth so they casted her in a lead role for the show Sonny With a Chance. In between this show and starring in her second film, Princess Protection Program (alongside her long time friend and far less talented Selena Gomez), Demi released her second album, Here We Go Again in June 2009. The album had a song go top 15 (Here We Go Again) and was once again met with positive reviews by critics. In 2010 she starred in Camp Rock 2 before shocking the world, announced she was taking a break from acting, ending Sonny With a Chance. After a brief rehab stay to deal with her eating disorders, being bullied about the gap in her teeth (I’m not making this up), and doing too much cocaine on airplanes (this either), Demi emerged from the ashes like a Skyscraper Phoenix and released her third album Unbroken in July 2011. It gave Lovato her second top ten hit (Skyscraper), and her second top 15 hit as well (Give Your Heart a Break). After being a judge/mentor on the X Factor, she released her fourth album, Demi, in July 2013. This album is when Demi really came into her own as a musician. The album had songs peaking in the top ten (Heart Attack), top 20 (Really Don’t Care), and top 30 (Neon Lights) Demi was once again struggling with her inner demons, but it didn’t stop her from releasing an absolute banger of an album, Confident, in October 2015. It had another song go top ten (Cool for the Summer), and top 20 (Confident), respectfully. She has to bow out of the supporting tour to deal with another stay at rehab, this time dealing with: mental illnesses including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety. Outside of a couple features we didn’t really get much from Demi, but once again she came back with a surprise song in June 2016, giving Demi her first top five hit (Sorry Not Sorry). This song, was the anchor for her 6th album, Tell Me You Love Me, which was released in September 2017. The next year she released a song called Sober, before overdosing on Heroin 33 days later. Really sad, kinda funny. We’ll see when Demi makes her 4th comeback from the constant drug abuse, but when we do, she’s gonna give us a big hit to mark that she’s back and better than ever before inevitably falling back down the same spiral. Rinse and Repeat. (I really hope I’m wrong).
Demi has hits. It’s a shame that her far less talented friend gets more shine just because the aforementioned friend dated Justin Bieber. Demi Lovato is the superior talent in every facet of the entertainment business and the lack of respect she gets is probably what drew her to drugs. Thanks a lot Selena.
5. Heart Attack – I’ll tell ya what, if Demi doesn’t stop doing drugs she’s gonna have one. If you pretend this song is about heroin instead of a boy the song gets more depressing than empowering.
4. Really Don’t Care (ft. Cher Llyod) – what happened to Cher Llyod? She had a run in 2011 doing songs with Juicy J and sounding like a helicopter. Other than this song it’s been crickets ever since. UPDATE: I just looked her up, she’s only 26?! She hasn’t released an album in 2014 so I guess she really did fall off the face of the earth.
3. Cool for the Summer: Are we in the trust tree? Okay good. Since this song was released in 2015 i honest to god believed until a couple weeks ago that the lyrics in the chorus were “don’t be scared cause I’m your blood type” and now the song makes much more sense.
2. Sorry Not Sorry – you can put the top three songs in any order and you’d be correct. I rotated all three of this songs at the one spot before settling for this order. All three of these are great songs and are pretty interchangeable at the top; if this blog series was called Tune Tuesday maybe this is number one.
1. Confident: when you’re down in the dumps, throw this bad boy on and feel like an empowered 17 year old girl who is ready to move on from her ex boyfriend of three months. (It wasn’t a typical three month relationship, they went to Jr. Prom together).
Best songs to sing and then overdose on heroin 33 days later.
1. Sober
I hope the best for Demi, I hope she beats these demons but when you date a guy with a forehead tattoo and pink hair, my expectations are low.
